I'm finding it difficult to find the zeal to match the title of this particular post; coming off of vacation, especially an awesome vacation, leaves one tired and longing for that most recent respite. Alas, weekends and vacations do end, even if they are the best ever.
We left on Friday afternoon. Catie and I in her car and Colin, Jesse and Gill in Jesse's Jeep. I can't verify this for the guys and Gill, but we had awesome tunes all the way up. See soundtrack below.
After our fast-paced and dance-induced northward-faring expedition, we arrived in Barnum, MN, population 482. Our first night eased us into our vacation. We listened to an extensive amount of Bob Dylan, drank a fair amount of wine, ate a fantastic dinner of homemade pizza and the best and only wild rice soup I've ever eaten. Our post-dinner activities included a competitive game of Trivial Pursuit. The team of Catie, Jesse and Gill proved ultimately victorious, but honestly, they got by with a little help from their friends, namely, me. To the chagrin of my teammate Colin, I leaked a few key answers. Honestly, they would have gotten them right anyway. We were joined toward the end of the game by Laura, who had to work before heading north. In all, the game lasted 6 hours.
One might think that after a long drive, a great dinner and a 6-hour game of trivial pursuit, that we would all be headed for bed. One would be way wrong. Time was lost track of and we stayed up way past our bedtimes into the wee hours of the morn--er--day. I think I tucked in around 5:30 a.m., Laura and Catie clocked in at 6 or thereafter!
Having had a fair bit of wine to drink and having the somewhat fortunate yet somewhat unfortunate habit of waking early after drinking a fair bit of wine, I awoke at precisely 9:28. I waited until I heard the pitter-patter of little feet before treading upstairs. So begins our second day.
We had an eggs benedict casserole for breakfast that was made by Catie's mom. After this we packed up and headed to Spirit Mountain for some skiing and snowboarding. I did not wipe out once! I did, however, nearly wet myself a few times. I was thankful that I had recently picked up a helmet; I wanted to preserve and protect my reason and mental faculties, or what's left of them anyway. (an added bonus: I was finally able to find a locus for my nerdy Jos Fritz Bücher sticker that I got in Freiburg. It now resides on my sporty helmut.)
We came home, had an awesome mom-made veggie lasagna and watched Napoleon Dynamite and the Best of Will Ferrell-Saturday Night Live. We managed to go to bed earlier, but it was 3:30 before I was in bed.
Sunday, our last day up north, brought a yummy blueberry french toast dish, made by Catie. Oh, my gosh, it was so good. Afterward we watched the Mike Myers best of SNL and then played some broom ball. Colin, Laura and I proved victorious and I proved to be a magnet for bruises. We headed for the hot tub and then onto our drive to the cities.
We got back, everybody but me played soccer and then we went out to O' Garas for some beer and some pool. It was an easy, laid back and fun weekend, but a great weekend. It was great to just to be up north, away from the city, on a lake and with great people.
