Have you ever looked closely at how birds land? Maybe I've only noticed this once, when I was in Germany a few years back. Birds of different sizes and shapes came to land near the river along which I was walking. They came to land, but landing was a process; once they landed, they caught their balance by circling around 2 or three times. Since arriving in Sierra Vista a little over three weeks ago, I've felt like such a bird.
This summer in Ohio I learned that I am not as good at adapting as I would like. It takes me longer and that's the long and short of it. It is neither good nor bad, it's just how I am. This knowledge and now honest summation of my need for time to attach to a place has been helpful as I've attempted to land in super southeastern Arizona.
Being honest doesn't necessarily make it easier, but it allows for relaxation and comfort while preparing to land. I can honestly say that I've landed; I've found my land legs and I am feeling stronger every day. I'm learning how to reach out; to the people in Arizona, to family and friends miles away, to myself, to God.
For those of you in Minnesota and elsewhere, the people of Sierra Vista and particularly Sierra Ev. Lutheran Church are welcoming and loving; they have a very developed sense of hospitality and warmth.
For those of you in Sierra Vista, thank you. I am so happy and honored to be a part of your family. I look forward to developing this relationship throughout this next year and beyond.
